Chris Smith

Chris works for Asheville NC based seed company, Sow True Seed. Sow True Seed is committed to supporting a sustainable food system through diverse and sovereign seed, which aligns with the values of The Peoples Seed. Chris grew up in England but has lived, gardened and farmed in the Southeast since 2012. Chris is an active seed saver and experimenter, and as part of his work with Sow True Seed he writes about and teaches seed saving and other food production related topics. He’s a garden writer for local and national publications and is working on a book titled, In Defense of Okra, which is a celebration of all things okra (to be published by Chelsea Green in April 2019). As a student of permaculture, a homesteader and a seed grower, Chris is committed to saving old varieties and developing new open source ones. He also collaborates with the Heirloom Collards Project, is on the board of Slow Food Asheville, volunteers with Organic Growers School and offers homesteading consultation. Chris brings a knowledge of, and a passion for, all things seeds to The People’s Seed. Learn more at and
