The new seed paradigm will be piloted in the Southeastern US in 2018 with the goal of expanding across the country in the following years. In each region of the country, The People’s Seed will bring together an annual Seed Summit of seed breeders, savers and advocates to determine current priorities in regional seed development.
We will work with stakeholders to develop the best team of breeders, farmers, and consumers to address the seed summit’s priorities and provide grants to fund the work.
All seed and plant material will be protected through the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI) to permanently ensure freedom of use.
The Open Source Seed Initiative is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to providing an open source exchange system for plant varieties and populations that keeps agricultural seed in the hands of many rather than in the control of just a few. They use the OSSI Pledge to ensure the rights of farmers, gardeners, breeders and communities to freely use, save, replant and improve OSSI-Pledged seed.

The People’s Seed, in partnership with other organic seed initiatives, will educate consumers about the seed industry, breeding and new varieties.
Fundraising through individual donations, sponsorships and campaigns with cooperative grocery stores will ensure adequate short and long-term funding for plant breeding projects. Our long-term goal is to raise a $10 million endowment for each region of the country and invest it in social and environmental funds. Average returns are about 6%, which would provide $600,000 per year in each region for operating costs and funding our partner’s projects.
